smashing discovery

Scientist have announced the discovery of a new sub atomic particle that could be Higgs boson- - popularly known as 'god particle'- that is believed to be the basic building  block of the universe.

what they did?

scientist at CERN accelerated protons at 99.9999991% of the speed of light in the large Hadron  Collider and made them collide and explode to produce enough energy to create the 'God particle '

what they found?

a particle weighing in at 125.3 giga electro volts(geV) - about  133 times heavier than the proton at the heart of every atom.ii last less than a millionth-of a billionth-of a second

is it the Higg boson???

scientist are not sure yet .But this finding is at the 'five-sigma' point , the gold standard in physics for a discovery .That is , there is only a one - in -3.5 million chance that the discovery is the result of a fluke in data

why is discovery important ??

So far,the Higgs boson only exist in theory . The higg theory explains how would the Higg boson , the universe would have remained a formless soup of particles . proof it exists could lead to new understanding of how universe began .

what if it is something else ???

scientist are excited at thought because all the matter we can see and understand comprises just 4%of the universe. any new particle could help us to understand the other 96% of the universe.
